Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has publicly defended young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal after the football sensation faced criticism from Israeli officials for waving a Palestinian flag during Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations.
The 18-year-old winger became the center of attention during Barcelona’s open-top bus parade in the city earlier this week, where fans celebrated the club’s second consecutive La Liga triumph. During the celebrations, Yamal was seen proudly holding a Palestinian flag, a gesture that quickly ignited reactions across political and sports circles.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz strongly criticized the footballer, accusing him of promoting division and “inciting hatred” against Israel. In a statement shared on social media, Katz urged FC Barcelona to clearly distance itself from Yamal’s actions and condemn any support linked to extremism or terrorism.
However, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded firmly in support of the young player. Sanchez stated that expressing solidarity with Palestine should not be interpreted as hate speech and argued that millions of Spaniards share similar feelings regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
According to Sanchez, waving the flag of a recognized state cannot reasonably be labeled as incitement. He also praised Yamal for standing by what he believes in, adding that the footballer’s actions gave many Spaniards another reason to feel proud of him.
The situation has further highlighted the growing political tensions between Spain and Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Spain has been one of the more vocal European nations criticizing Israel’s military actions, with Sanchez previously referring to the war in Gaza as a “genocide.” Diplomatic relations between the two countries have worsened significantly since the conflict escalated following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
Meanwhile, support for Palestine remains highly visible across Spain, including among sports fans and public figures. Reports from Gaza also revealed that artists in a refugee camp painted a mural of Yamal holding the Palestinian flag, turning the footballer into a symbolic figure for many Palestinians.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick commented on the controversy by saying he personally did not agree with Yamal’s actions but respected the player’s right to make his own decisions.
The debate surrounding Yamal’s gesture has quickly expanded beyond football, becoming part of a wider international conversation about freedom of expression, solidarity, politics in sports, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
