Gov't Introduces QR Code Trial to Ease KLIA Congestion

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian government is set to roll out a trial Quick Response (QR) code system exclusively for Malaysian travelers this month, aiming to streamline immigration checks at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that the QR code system would be operational at 40 dedicated lanes, addressing the frequent congestion at the country’s busiest entry points, particularly during peak travel seasons and festive periods.

“This system will significantly reduce the time taken for immigration checks, cutting it down to just 5-7 seconds per traveler compared to the 15-25 seconds required with traditional automatic gates,” said Saifuddin. He emphasized that the initiative enhances security, improves service efficiency, and leverages advanced technology to minimize operational leakages.

Under the QR code system, travelers will not need to present their passports at immigration checkpoints but must carry them throughout their journey for verification purposes.

The existing manual counters and conventional automatic gates will remain in operation alongside the QR code system, offering travelers multiple options for immigration clearance.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah previously highlighted the government’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions like the QR code system to alleviate congestion at KLIA and expedite immigration processes.

This initiative marks a significant step in modernizing Malaysia’s airport infrastructure while enhancing convenience and security for travelers.
