US Urges Calm and Cooperation After Pahalgam Attack, Hopes Pakistan Supports India in Fight Against Terror

NEW YORK, May 2 – In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead, US Vice President JD Vance has expressed deep concern over the growing tensions in South Asia and emphasized the importance of restraint, unity, and international cooperation.

Speaking to Fox News, Vance—who was in India with his family during the time of the attack—condemned the violence and called for a careful, measured response. “We sincerely hope that India chooses to respond in a way that avoids further escalation and doesn’t lead to a broader regional conflict,” he said, reflecting the Biden administration’s cautious approach to rising tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Vance acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation, noting the loss of innocent lives. “It’s heartbreaking anytime innocent civilians are targeted, and we stand in solidarity with the victims and their families. No one should have to experience that kind of horror.”

When asked about the possibility of conflict between India and Pakistan, Vance didn’t downplay the seriousness of the situation. “Anytime there’s a flare-up between nations with such history and capability, it’s deeply concerning,” he said. “We’re staying closely connected with both Indian and Pakistani leaders. Our goal is to support a peaceful and just outcome.”

He also pointedly urged Pakistan to step up. “If there are individuals or groups operating from Pakistani territory involved in this attack, we hope and expect Pakistan to cooperate fully with India to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. Terror has no place on any soil.”

The Vice President’s comments come amid heightened diplomatic tensions. India has already taken strong measures, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and shutting down the Attari land border post.

The Resistance Front (TRF), widely seen as a proxy for Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The global community has widely condemned the violence, with leaders across continents standing with India and calling for a united front against terrorism.

Vice President Vance’s heartfelt message, delivered while still processing the tragedy from the ground, underscores the US’s desire to avoid another chapter of conflict in the region—while firmly standing with victims of terror.
