Trump declares national emergency over foreign-made equipment in US power grid

US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency over the use of foreign-made equipment in the country’s electric power grid, raising fresh concerns about national security and the growing vulnerability of America’s energy infrastructure.

The executive order gives the US government new powers to restrict companies from buying, importing or installing certain foreign-made equipment used in the nation’s bulk-power system.

The bulk-power system is the backbone of the country’s electricity network. It includes major power plants, high-voltage transmission lines and substations that move electricity across large parts of the United States.

The move comes as America’s demand for electricity continues to rise. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centres, advanced technology facilities and other energy-intensive projects has made a reliable power supply increasingly important to the US economy.

Trump’s order argues that a major disruption to the power grid could now have even greater consequences than in the past, affecting businesses, technology infrastructure, essential services and communities that depend on uninterrupted electricity.

A major concern highlighted by the administration is the possibility that foreign-manufactured equipment could contain hidden digital vulnerabilities, including software “backdoors”. Such vulnerabilities could potentially provide unauthorized access to critical infrastructure or allow equipment to be disrupted remotely.

The order targets equipment linked to countries subject to US arms embargoes or sanctions, as well as governments that the US administration determines are acting against American interests.

Although China is not specifically named in the order, Chinese-made equipment has been a longstanding concern for US national security officials. Washington has previously taken similar action against Chinese telecommunications companies, including Huawei and ZTE, citing concerns that their technology could potentially be used for espionage or sabotage.

The latest decision reflects a broader shift in how governments view critical infrastructure. Power grids are no longer seen simply as physical networks of cables, transformers and substations. They are increasingly connected to sophisticated digital systems, making cybersecurity and supply-chain security just as important as physical protection.

For businesses, energy companies and technology providers, the development could also lead to greater scrutiny of where critical equipment is manufactured, how its software is secured and who ultimately controls the technology behind essential infrastructure.
