Saudi Arabia investigates Flydubai emergency landing after cockpit altercation injures crew

Saudi Arabia has launched an investigation after a Flydubai passenger aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk following an altercation inside the cockpit that left the captain and first officer injured.

The incident involved Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it was diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s National Transport Safety Centre said it had opened an aviation safety investigation after receiving a report about the emergency landing. An investigation team has begun examining what happened and is working with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, verify aviation safety matters and gather information and evidence.

Flydubai confirmed that an altercation took place inside the flight deck during the journey. According to the airline, members of the crew were able to secure the aircraft and divert it safely to Saudi Arabia.

The airline said all passengers and crew members were safe and accounted for following the emergency landing. However, the circumstances and motives behind the cockpit altercation remain under formal investigation.

The situation became serious enough for the aircraft to request emergency assistance from air traffic controllers. Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport said its Air Traffic Control Centre received a distress call from flight FZ1073 at approximately 8:44 a.m. local time, requesting permission to make an emergency landing.

Airport authorities later confirmed that both the captain and first officer had sustained injuries and were transferred to a hospital for medical treatment.

The aircraft was carrying 174 passengers. During the incident, the flight reportedly transmitted the international emergency code 7700, which signals a general emergency, followed later by code 7500, which is associated with unlawful interference involving an aircraft.

The use of the emergency codes added to the seriousness of the situation and prompted authorities to respond while the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk. Investigators are now expected to establish the sequence of events and determine what led to the incident inside the cockpit.

Despite the disruption, passengers were eventually able to continue their journey. The airport said all passengers departed at around 5:40 p.m. local time aboard an alternative aircraft arranged by Flydubai.

For the passengers on board, what began as a routine flight between Dubai and Tel Aviv became an unexpected emergency that required a major diversion and the involvement of aviation and airport authorities. While the aircraft landed safely and passengers were able to continue their journey, questions surrounding the cockpit altercation remain unanswered.

The investigation will now focus on establishing exactly what happened during the flight, why the altercation occurred and how the crew responded before the aircraft was safely diverted to Saudi Arabia. Authorities have not announced a final conclusion, and further details are expected as the formal investigation progresses.

This incident once again highlights how quickly aviation authorities and flight crews must respond when an unexpected situation develops in the air. For now, the focus remains on the investigation, the recovery of the injured crew members and establishing the verified facts surrounding the emergency landing.
