Malaysia Posts RM0.7 Billion Services Surplus for First Time in 14 Years, Anwar Credits Fiscal Discipline

In a historic economic milestone, Malaysia has recorded a services sector surplus of RM0.7 billion in the third quarter of 2025—the first time the nation has seen a surplus in 14 years. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the figures today in Parliament, highlighting the country’s remarkable turnaround.

During the Dewan Rakyat session, responding to Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse, Anwar shared, “One very interesting figure I want to highlight is our deficit, which used to be a real problem. But in 2025, in the third quarter, we recorded a surplus for the first time and were no longer in deficit after 14 years.”

The prime minister attributed this achievement to meticulous economic planning and disciplined fiscal management, coupled with a healthy current account balance. “In the third quarter, the figure was 12.2 per cent. I do not mean to repeat all the programmes we implemented, but this shows fiscal discipline and orderly management of the country,” he added.

Anwar also noted that these measures have strengthened investor and public confidence in the Malaysian economy, contributing to the ringgit’s strong performance among Asian currencies.

This positive development is a clear reflection of Malaysia’s commitment to stable economic governance and forward-looking policies, demonstrating that strategic planning and fiscal responsibility can yield tangible results that impact everyday life for citizens and businesses alike.
