In a heartfelt call for safety, the District Administration of Srinagar has urged residents from seven flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately as a precautionary measure following a reported breach at Shalina in Budgam.
The localities under immediate advisory include Lasjan, Soiteng, Nowgam, Vyethpora, Gopalpora, Padshahibagh, and Mehjoor Nagar. Authorities have emphasized that this is a preemptive move to protect lives, not a cause for panic.
Early this morning, announcements echoed through local mosques, community speakers, and door-to-door messaging by revenue and police officials, urging families to move to safer ground. The air is heavy with worry, but also with a sense of unity and resilience.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry,” said a local resident of Nowgam, hurriedly packing essentials while ensuring elderly members and children were moved first. “We’ve seen the Jhelum rise before, but this time we’re not taking chances.”
The Jhelum River, already swollen from continuous rainfall, had breached its danger mark at Sangam (27.64 feet) and Ram Munshi Bagh (22.37 feet) as of 2:00 AM today, according to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. Though levels have started to slightly recede—27.48 feet at Sangam and 22.31 feet at Ram Munshi Bagh by 5:00 AM—the risk remains.
Authorities are urging residents to stay calm, stay informed, and most importantly, stay safe. Emergency services are on standby, and relief centers are being activated to accommodate displaced families.
Let us come together in these testing times—not just as residents, but as a united community. Your cooperation can save lives.
