Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and prioritise diplomacy over conflict as tensions continue to rise across West Asia.
During a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, Anwar expressed concern over the ongoing conflict and escalating situation in the region.
The 30-minute meeting provided an opportunity for both leaders to discuss regional developments, bilateral relations and the importance of maintaining peace through dialogue.
Anwar emphasised the need to protect the freedom and safety of maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law. The strategic waterway is vital to global trade and energy transportation, making its security a matter of international concern.
“Malaysia urged all parties to return to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes and de-escalate the situation,” Anwar said during the meeting.
His message reflects Malaysia’s continued call for peaceful solutions, constructive engagement and an end to actions that could further deepen instability in the region.
Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, welcomed the long-standing diplomatic relations between Putrajaya and Tehran. He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Iran across several important areas.
The Prime Minister also called for greater trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. Areas highlighted included energy, agriculture, palm oil, food security, halal industries, technology and higher education.
These sectors offer opportunities for Malaysia and Iran to build stronger economic ties while supporting shared development goals.
Beyond diplomatic discussions, the meeting highlighted the importance of international cooperation during uncertain times. Maintaining secure maritime routes and encouraging peaceful dialogue remain essential to protecting economies, communities and global stability.
