In a move aimed at easing financial pressure on workers, Iran’s labour minister has announced a substantial hike in the country’s minimum wage—over 60 per cent—according to local media reports. This decision comes months after widespread protests erupted across Iran, fueled by frustration over soaring living costs and economic hardships.
The Tasnim news agency reported that “with the government’s approval,” the monthly minimum wage will rise from 103 million rials to 166 million rials in the upcoming Persian calendar year. Alongside the wage increase, authorities have also confirmed a similar boost in child support benefits, signaling a broader effort to support families facing economic strain.
Iran adjusts its minimum wage annually to offset inflation, which has surged amid international sanctions and ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Israel and the United States. The Iranian currency currently trades at roughly 1.47 million rials to the US dollar, according to monitoring website Bonbast.
Economic protests began in December last year as citizens grappled with the rising cost of living and the depreciation of their national currency. What started as local demonstrations quickly transformed into a nationwide movement, with many demanding sweeping political reforms.
