Gulmarg, September 22 — In a bold step towards putting India on the global map of mountain biking, Zabarvan has announced the MTB Downhill – Zabarvan Legends Series, the country’s first-ever international downhill mountain biking event. The thrilling event is set to take place in the scenic slopes of Gulmarg from October 9 to 12, drawing elite riders from across India and countries like Australia, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil, and Indonesia.
This announcement was made during a press conference where Zabarvan’s spokesperson outlined the significance of the event. “This marks Phase Three of our long-term mission to unite India’s fragmented mountain sports community,” the official said.
From Grassroots to Global
Zabarvan’s vision has been unfolding in structured phases:
-
Phase One focused on developing affordable, high-quality gear within India, boosting both accessibility and safety.
-
Phase Two was all about discovering, training, and sponsoring local talent. This includes champions like Zubair Ahmad Lone, training for the 2026 Winter Olympics in snowboarding, and Adil Teli, a Guinness World Record holder set to represent India in the UCI competition in Australia.
-
Phase Three, now in motion, introduces international-standard grassroots events to elevate local athletes and increase their exposure to world-class competition.
After nearly 18 months of dialogue with central and state governments, and backed by sponsors like Indigo, Spoke Hub, Kirloskar Ferrous, and Span Foundation, Zabarvan is ready to make history. The launch of the Zabarvan Legends Series also marks the organization’s second anniversary.
A Ride Through Culture and Courage
The MTB Downhill Series will unfold across three stunning Indian terrains: Gulmarg (Jammu & Kashmir), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Guwahati (Assam). Each location promises not only a different biking challenge but a deeper connection with local culture, food, and folklore.
The Gulmarg trail, known as Draksheen Vaar, stretches 2.5 kilometers and demands both elite fitness and precision skills. Riders will ascend back using the gondola — allowing time for rest and practice.
Powered by Community & Courage
Acknowledging the immense support from various departments and leaders like Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, MLA Farooq Shah, and CEO GDA Tariq Hussain Naik, the Zabarvan team emphasized that the trail and event logistics were built with local hands and hearts. From race marshals and medics to volunteers and infrastructure, the community stands at the heart of this endeavor.
The official extended gratitude to the Wildlife Department, Forest Department, JKCC Corporation, ATV Association, and passionate individuals including Hassan Lalla, Zubair Ahmad Lone, and Farhat Naik for their critical roles in making the event possible.
