PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal, Ensuring All-Weather Connectivity

Sonamarg, Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Z-Morh tunnel in Sonamarg, located in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, marking a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.

The Z-Morh tunnel, spanning 6.5 kilometers near Gagengar on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, is a vital project aimed at providing year-round connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. The Prime Minister inspected the tunnel, interacted with project authorities and workers, and lauded their efforts in completing the strategic initiative.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and several Union Ministers. Following the event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public gathering in Sonamarg later in the afternoon.

The Z-Morh tunnel, developed by Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd at an estimated cost of ₹2,700 crore, includes a 5-kilometer approach road and features bi-directional traffic capabilities along with an escape tunnel to enhance safety. The project is part of a larger effort to bolster connectivity and tourism in the region, facilitating access to Sonamarg, a prominent tourist destination in Ganderbal district.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the region and ensuring seamless travel between Srinagar and Ladakh, particularly during harsh winter months when traditional routes are often impassable.
