US Praises Progress in Ukraine Peace Framework Talks as Sovereignty Guarantees Stay Firm

The United States on Sunday welcomed what it called a “significant step forward” in peace framework discussions held in Switzerland, emphasizing that any negotiated settlement to end the Ukraine war must “fully uphold” Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a joint statement released shortly afterward, Washington and Kyiv confirmed that negotiators had produced an “updated and refined peace framework” following intensive discussions with Ukrainian and European officials.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the American delegation during Sunday’s meeting in Geneva, where diplomats worked to narrow differences over a proposed roadmap to end the conflict triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

President Donald Trump had previously set a November 27 deadline for Ukraine to accept his controversial proposal aimed at concluding nearly four years of fighting. However, Ukraine has pushed back against key sections of the original draft, which incorporated several of Moscow’s tough demands. The earlier 28-point plan required Kyiv to surrender territory, significantly reduce the size of its military, and pledge permanent neutrality by never joining NATO — conditions Ukraine has deemed unacceptable.

The announcement of a newly revised draft indicates that meaningful adjustments were made during the talks.

“The discussions were constructive, focused, and respectful, underscoring the shared commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace,” the joint US-Ukraine statement noted. It added that negotiators made “meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,” while reiterating that any eventual agreement must preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure a “sustainable and just peace.”

Both sides agreed to continue working intensively on joint proposals “in the coming days.”

According to a White House summary, Rubio and the US delegation reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to ensuring that Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and long-term prosperity remain central pillars of the diplomatic process.
