NYC’s Political Crossroads: Trump Warns of “Disaster” if Mamdani Wins, Backs Cuomo on Election Eve

On the eve of a historic mayoral vote, US President Donald Trump made a forceful appeal to New Yorkers, expressing grave concern about the future of New York City if Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the race. Trump publicly endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo, declaring that the city’s economic and social stability is at stake.

Speaking on Truth Social, Trump warned that a Mamdani victory would put New York City on a “complete and total economic and social disaster” trajectory, adding that he would only send minimum federal support if Mamdani becomes mayor.

Trump framed his endorsement not as a typical political choice but a necessary decision for the city’s survival.
“If Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins… this once great city has zero chance of success or even survival,” he wrote, insisting that federal funding under his presidency would be restricted if New Yorkers elect Mamdani.

Calling Mamdani inexperienced and “a nothing” as an Assembly member, Trump argued that the Democratic socialist’s policies would worsen the city’s challenges rather than restore its former glory. He said he preferred Cuomo — despite political differences — over a candidate he labels a “Communist.”

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump stated. “He is capable of it. Mamdani is not.”

Mamdani, 34, born in Uganda to Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, has surged in popularity, promising affordable living, rent freezes, and expanded housing as part of his vision for a more equitable New York. He won the Democratic primary earlier this year and now faces Cuomo, running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

More than 735,000 voters cast ballots during early voting — quadruple the turnout from 2021 — reflecting heightened public interest. With New Yorkers grappling with rising costs, housing pressures, and safety concerns, the decision at the polls carries weight beyond party lines.

Trump emphasized that a vote for Sliwa would ultimately help Mamdani, urging voters to make a strategic choice to avoid what he sees as a dangerous shift in city leadership.

Election day polls are open from 6 AM to 9 PM, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s future direction.
