Israel heard loud noises and sirens after Iran launched more than 200 missiles and drones in a rare and intense attack.

Explosions and air raid sirens were heard across Israel on Sunday following Iran’s firing of hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles in a highly unusual offensive that escalated tensions in the Middle East.

This marked Iran’s first direct military assault on Israel despite years of animosity stemming from events like the Islamic Revolution in 1979. International reactions condemned Iran’s actions, with France calling it “dangerous,” Britain deeming it “reckless,” and Germany urging Iran and its allies to cease immediately.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari reported that Iran launched numerous drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, most of which were intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace. Hagari confirmed several missiles landed in Israel, including one that hit an army base without causing injuries.

Israel responded by shooting down three Iranian drones entering its airspace, according to US defense sources. The Israeli military’s air defense systems, including the Arrow system for ballistic missiles, were activated and successfully intercepted most of the incoming threats.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation with US President Joe Biden, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense against Iranian aggression. Biden reiterated his support for Israel’s security while expressing concern over the escalating tensions in the region.

The Iranian attack was reportedly in retaliation for an airstrike in Syria that killed two Iranian generals. This incident escalated ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, which had intensified during Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

In response to Iran’s military actions, Israel’s Home Front Command issued warnings and protective measures in various regions, including ordering residents into shelters and temporarily closing schools.

The situation remains tense as Israel and Iran, along with their respective allies and partners, navigate the aftermath of this significant escalation in hostilities.
