Iran has officially withdrawn its visa-free entry facility for Indian travellers starting November 22, following a disturbing rise in cases where Indian citizens were deceived with false job offers or promises of onward travel to other countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, several Indians were persuaded by agents to fly to Iran using the visa-waiver option, only to find themselves stranded, exploited, or, in some alarming cases, kidnapped for ransom upon arrival. These incidents prompted urgent diplomatic attention and a decisive policy change.
What Has Changed?
Effective immediately, all Indian passport holders—whether visiting or simply transiting through Iran—must obtain a valid visa before travelling. This rule applies universally, including to passengers who are not staying in Iran but only passing through on their way to another destination.
Airlines have also been directed to ensure that every Indian traveler presents a valid Iranian visa before boarding.
Why This Step Was Taken
Authorities found that criminal groups were misusing the visa-free entry system to traffic vulnerable Indian citizens with fake promises of employment or onward migration. Once in Iran, many victims found themselves trapped in dangerous situations with limited support.
Government Advisory
The Indian government has issued a strong warning to all travellers:
Do not trust agents offering visa-free routes, work opportunities, or transit arrangements through Iran. Always verify travel requirements, stay cautious, and follow official guidelines to avoid exploitation.
