PUTRAJAYA, Aug 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged ASEAN nations to stand united in addressing the ongoing Myanmar crisis, while also pledging Malaysia’s steadfast support to Bangladesh as it shoulders the immense humanitarian challenge of hosting hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
Speaking with a tone of urgency and compassion, Anwar highlighted that peace in Myanmar cannot wait, and humanitarian aid for refugees and disaster victims—whether from conflict or natural calamities like earthquakes—must be delivered without delay.
“Bangladesh has been carrying a heavy burden, opening its arms to those in desperate need. I deeply commend the Bangladeshi authorities for their proactive efforts in international forums, from New York to Qatar and here in Malaysia,” Anwar said.
He revealed that Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, will soon coordinate with counterparts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand to lead a mission to Myanmar. The aim: to push for peace, stop violence against ethnic minorities, and work towards an amicable and lasting resolution.
Anwar’s remarks came during a joint press conference with Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, who is in Malaysia for a three-day official visit from August 11 to 13.
This call for regional unity serves as a reminder that compassion and collaboration remain vital in confronting both political crises and humanitarian tragedies in Southeast Asia.
