Sabah Cancels Malaysia Day Celebrations to Prioritize Flood and Landslide Relief

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 15 — In a heartfelt and decisive move, the Sabah state government has announced the cancellation of the Malaysia Day state-level celebration scheduled for tomorrow at Padang Merdeka. The reason: to channel all available resources toward responding to the severe floods and landslides affecting at least seven districts in the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor personally conveyed this decision to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, earlier today, emphasizing that the government’s top priority is now saving lives and aiding affected communities.

“In this time of difficulty, the well-being, welfare, and security of the people are of utmost importance,” said Hajiji. “We must direct all focus and resources to those affected.”

Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered devastating flash floods and landslides across various districts—impacting both the west coast and interior regions, including the state capital. Meanwhile, the east coast is facing power outages after the collapse of a Sabah Electricity tower.

Tragically, at least two lives have already been lost.

The State Disaster Management Committee, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Sr Safar Untong, is operating around the clock, coordinating rescue operations and ensuring swift responses as the situation evolves.

Hajiji has instructed the committee to remain on full alert, reinforcing that quick action can save lives. He also urged the public to stay vigilant, follow official safety updates, and cooperate fully with emergency and rescue personnel.

In times like these, celebration must take a back seat to compassion.
The cancellation of the Malaysia Day event is not just an administrative decision; it’s a reminder of what truly matters—people. While patriotism brings us together on special days, humanity must lead us forward when disaster strikes. Let us all extend our hearts, hands, and hopes to those affected. Sabah, you are not alone.
