Rising Waters Alert: LCMA Urges Dal Lake Residents and Houseboat Owners to Stay Prepared

In an important appeal to the people who call Dal Lake their home, the Jammu & Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (J&K LCMA) has issued an advisory, urging caution and preparedness as water levels in the River Jhelum continue to rise dangerously.

The Jhelum has now crossed the 21-foot danger mark — a threshold that demands immediate attention. As part of emergency measures, the gate at Ram Munshi Bagh may be opened at any time to manage the floodwaters. This action, while necessary for broader water regulation, could cause a further spike in Dal Lake’s water level, which already stands at 10.5 feet.

This advisory is particularly crucial for the Dal dwellers and houseboat owners — communities who have lived in harmony with the lake for generations. The LCMA has appealed to them to remain vigilant, take all necessary safety measures, and be prepared to relocate to relief centers set up by the District Administration of Srinagar, should the situation worsen.

This isn’t just a technical update — it’s a heartfelt call to protect lives, livelihoods, and heritage. The lake isn’t just water; it’s home. It’s where families have built memories, where tourists have experienced Kashmiri warmth, and where generations have made a living.

Let’s stay informed, stay connected, and above all — stay safe. If you or your loved ones live near the lake, now is the time to prepare. Help spread the word.
